The Moore Family Tree

This is the story of the Moore Family tree traced from William George Moore born in 1886 in Southwark, London who Married Ethel Groves and had six boys Arthur, Len, Cyril, Sidney, Les & Ron who all survived World War Two. They lived in a small council house in south west London, 95 Southcroft Road, Tooting. Originally the family were agricultural labourers who lived in Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England just north west of London in the rolling chalk hills of the Chilterns. Because of the Agricultural Revolution and the Enclosure Laws they had to move to London or starve. London's Industrial revolution required coal. The Moore family lived in Lambeth near Waterloo Railway Station and worked as coal porters taking coal off the ships on the River Thames and delivering it to customers by horse and cart. Across the river London's Fleet Street Newspaper industry needed skilled workers. The next generation of Moores became printers. This tradition was kept until Ron Moore retired aged 65 as the Works Manager of a printing company in 1994. The Surname ‘Moore’ is of English Anglo-Saxon origin. It is a location name relating to a generic feature. People who worked the land on one of the many upland moor areas of England were given the name Moore the ‘e’ meaning of or from.
