1876
From St Mary at Lambeth Parish Church records we gain extra
information about the Moore family. The
church is next door to Lambeth Palace the ancient Tudor London
home of the Archbishop of Canterbury who is head of the English
Anglican Church. It is opposite Horseferry Road Bridge on the
south bank of the river Thames near the Houses of Parliament and
Big Ben. It is now the Museum of Garden History. Captain Bligh
of ‘Mutiny on HMS Bounty’ Fame is buried in the grave yard. He
sailed with Captain Cook on his voyages of discovery and was
governor of Australia. There were churches nearer to John Street
where the Moore family lived but St Marys church is special
because of its location and prestige. It was a great location
for weddings and baptisms.
Charles Moore aged 23 married
Maria Rignall aged 22 at St Mary at Lambeth Parish Church on 27th
February 1876. She was born in Islington in 1849 but lived
locally to Charles. This is probably how they met but the
marriage certificate showed that they were both living at John
Street. Maria was pregnant
when she was married to Charles as there son Charles William
Moore was born 10th August 1876. On the birth
certificate it showed that they were living at 11 Tennison
Street, York Road, Lambeth.
Her father Richard Ragnall had
moved from Cambridgeshire to London and was now an Engine
Driver. He probably worked at the New Waterloo Railway Station
for the London and South Western Railway Company L&SWR
taking passengers to and from the south coast of England. There
family home was at 16 Doon Street, Waterloo Road, Lambeth. It is
reasonable to assume that Joel and Richard might have known each
other if Joel delivered coal to the railway station.
Unfortunately Maria dies in 1881 after giving birth to Albert
Moore. Charles re marries to Mary Herd. He needs someone to help
look after all the children.
